In this time of dos (do exercise, do drink coal slag spring water) and don’ts (don’t eat pig parts, don’t diss your boss on Facebook) there is one place you can go where the philosophy of the day is always “what do you want to do” and that is your local bar. Not just any bar but a bar where nobody is texting and where people are genuinely talking to each other. A bar that puts the happy in happy hour.
I evaluate a bar on 10 things in this order.
-Fast service. Forget rusty signs and girls dressed like Daisy Duke. If you have to wait 10 minutes for a drink that is 9 minutes too long.
-Friendly service. A smile and friendly greeting (maybe a “how you doing shuga”) go a long way in setting the mood for the evening. I worked at a four star restaurant during college and they taught me to be purposely rude and arrogant and I have to say people really ate it up. However, I am not typically a tourist paying $50 for weird fish with a cream sauce on it so I fall for friendly every time.
-Quality drinks. Decent liquors in the well that won’t make you blind and a good selection of premium liquors like Republic Tequila to choose from.
-Atmosphere. Music not so loud I can’t talk to my neighbor. No blaring TV’s with the Bulgaria versus Moldavia soccer match (score still 0 to 0 after 3 hours)
-Variety of seating. My wife won’t sit on a bar stool. I won’t sit on a couch with a table 3 feet away. A mixture of booths and tables is nice.
-Friendly fellow patrons. No loud drunks (voted most likely to spill a beer down your back) and no prissy types sipping white wine.
-Something unique. My favorites include a bar with a patron maintained library. Take or leave a book, nobody counts. Another favorite, a bar where you cook a mini steak on a hot rock.
-Clean. Maybe I’m showing my age but sticking my button down shirt sleeve in a puddle of beer or sitting on ketchup doesn’t thrill like it did in school.
-Enough bathrooms. All the fluid coming from the bar has to go somewhere. Further comment not required.
-Salty snack treats. Popcorn and peanuts are a nice treat.
Please ignore any unintentional insults to Bulgarian soccer fans and white wine fans and join me with a Republic Tequila in a bar near you.

This blog post comes from the new Republic Tequila intern, Brittney. Brittney has a tips on planning for a successeful Holiday weekend, so read up!

The 4th of July stands for all of the things we love about our country: barbeque, grilling, watermelon, cold beer, margaritas, shooting off fireworks, and having a day off work to spend time with family and friends. Whether you spend the holiday at home, on vacation, with relatives, with no relatives, with friends, or completely by yourself there are definitely a few things everyone should prepare for in order to successfully celebrate our great nation.
1. Traffic.
Getting to your favorite firework viewing spot is pretty much always a hassle. Plan on leaving early, don’t forget your blankets and chairs, and park yourself in a prime location to watch the sky explode with colors.
2. Bugs
If you’re not outside on the 4th of July then you aren’t celebrating properly. Don’t ruin your day itching and let the mosquitoes get the best of you, always be prepared with bug spray when you plan on heading outdoors.
3. Food & Drinks
You can’t overbuy. The worst party is the party that runs out of food. Go to the closest grocery store and/or liquor store to stock up in bulk on your favorite buns, dogs, drinks, and Republic Tequila Spirit Blends to ensure a successful (and full) holiday. Need cocktail recipe ideas? Check out our Kitchen Cocktails page
4. Fireworks
There are numerous places to watch them and they’re always one of the best parts of the day. Wish you could create your own show? This year, you can. The new Swakker Fireworks App lets you create a show along with a personal message so you can test your skills and impress your friends.
No matter how you celebrate, or who you celebrate with, 4th of July is always the time to remember how much you love your country and be thankful to the troops who serve it. Have fun, be safe, drink responsibly, and remember not to be sad the holiday is over because there’s always another one next year!
Happy 4th of July!

This month’s blog post comes to us from our awesome intern, Stephanie Ignacio!
“back in my day, we used to do something called sneaking off to go smoke pot. Nowadays, we do this thing called sneaking off to go take a nap”
-Louis Black, on where he would be at SXSW this year

Louis Black speaks with Alcalde Editor, Tim Talifero
As the new intern for Republic Tequila this semester I have been presented with many opportunities to attend events that I would normally not even have heard of. On this day in particular I was lucky enough to be able to get to hear Louis Black, the founder of SXSW, speak at an event held by Alcalde magazine, a publication distributed to members of Texas Exes.
Having only ever have been at the venue during a football game, I was pleasantly surprised at the venue’s décor; the perfect ambiance for an evening getting to intimately know someone so innately Austin. As Louis Black entered the room, his face was unmistakably the one gracing the covers of the magazines scattered around the room. He seemed to be one of those eccentric elder gentlemen, the kind that are really upfront about their feelings, though as he began his interview on stage he seemed rather put off about being in the spotlight. He came to Texas as a master student in English and seems like your average old dad…if you dad managed to pull off creating arguably the most important music event that happens in Austin in the spring.
But how did that happen, this seemingly ordinary older gentlemen; oh, I’m sorry, did I mention, also the Editor, of one of the most prestigious Austin publications, The Austin Chronicle. Although he is a famous, “non – learner” Black stated that he had always been interested in books and film – he also didn’t start out as the editor, and prefers to macro, rather than micro edit. As people began to ask questions about the evolution of these two vehicles and how it felt to work on them, he answered simply and humbly that
“it is a privilege to work with people who care about what they do.”
Which seems like a great business model; working with people with whom you are able to share your passions with. As SXSW grows into an organism with a presence that is palpable nationwide, it has changed from a small Austin affair into a festival whose influences reach people even internationally. When asked about the future endeavors of his projects, Black says that the prestige that SXSW has garnered could be a catalyst for the Chronicle’s national recognition.
Now on to the questions that everyone wants to know the answer to. How do they choose the bands and music? According to Black,
“Ten thousand bands submit music online, and there is a two step process, first a graded selection then they are staff chosen…for film, they choose three hundred out of four thousand.”
He also quipped that he stopped being on the panel for listening to bands after about three years, and that they would have to reconcile the fact that good bands will get passed up. The panels obviously care an enormous amount about the quality of content provided, and he said that oftentimes the discussions have been heated
“sometimes they get passionate…I’ve been there when they’ve thrown chairs.”
Overall however, Louis loves what he does. When asked where he would be hanging out in the festival he responded that
“We work in the streets – we don’t sit around smoking cigars and watching porn.”
I personally love that, and I’m sure there is no other place he would rather be. As the creator of something this grandiose in nature, it is only fitting that he watch carefully after his baby. Now, being a college student on a budget I was quite interested to know his take on all of the “unofficial” SXSW festivities that occur –
“In my opinion it makes it great. There’s music everywhere, it makes it fun. I love when I wake up to music at 1:00 AM. My favorite part is standing on the street and watching people. It’s people who love rock and roll. It’s Disneyland for people who love music and film.”
With that last quote, I think that the evening was quite the event. It is so inspiring to see someone who chose what they loved to do and succeed in doing it as their livelihood. If you’re supposed to put out more in the world than you take, I think Louis Black has done an amazing job of that.
Those of us here in Texas like to brag that “everything is bigger in Texas”, and we do have a lot of BIG things: Longhorns, ten gallons Stetsons, and of course the Capitol building.
However, we here at Republic are proud to introduce something quintessentially Texas, but in a small package, OUR TEXAS MINI BOTTLE! The excitement here generated by something so proverbially ‘cute’ speaks to a big heart in a little bottle. We’ve worked hard with engineers, glass manufacturers and suppliers to create the perfect small version of the Lone Star State, but it’s what on the inside, the tequila, that counts. In introducing this new size, we hope to introduce the Republic to even more fine folks – it’s the perfect sampling size that will have those of you trying for the first time coming back for more.

Our mini bottle measures in at just 3.5 inches tall!
In celebration of this little Lone Star State, we would like remind you of a few other tiny things in Texas:
- State Highway 168, which connects the Coast Guard Station at Galveston to State Highway 87, is the shortest main state highway in Texas at only 0.87 miles long.
- The Comal River is Texas’ shortest navigable river. It begins at Comal Springs and flows 2.5 miles until it connects to the Guadalupe River.
- Acton State Historic Site is the smallest state Park in Texas at 0.006 acres. This spot marks the grave of Davy Crockett’s second wife, Elizabeth.
- St. Martin’s Church in Warrenton is the world’s smallest active Catholic Church. It is 12ft x16ft, has 12 pews and seats about 20 people.
Remember, good things do come in small packages!
Viva Republic!
The Team
Our Holiday blog posting comes to us from Republic’s resident Uncle Scrooge and CFO, Chris Munson.
Etiquette and family sensitivities around the holidays are a minefield.
The worst thing about getting bad gifts is you can’t tell the person that you don’t like it while they are still breathing. A prime example of gifts gone awry is the hideous chair we have wedged into a corner of our dining room. It is a red velvet French bordello style chair. If you don’t know what a bordello is, your mother would be proud. Oh, and because ugly needs to get around it is on wheels! Apparently the French after a gorging like to roll themselves around. We can never get rid of the chair because someone close to my wife, who shall remain nameless, gave it to us. My wife thought the cats might like to sit in it but in a house full of cats who shed on and scratch every conceivable surface the chair remains pristine. Now, we have a chair that has tenure on a long and unfruitful life. Why? As everyone who has gotten an ugly sweater from their Mom knows, you can’t get rid of it because it would hurt their feelings.
Another sensitivity is the holiday feast. Some say bring out every disgusting family recipe from the old country or the back of a soup can. I cook a turkey with two side dishes. A duck and mashed potatoes. I have had enough undercooked green bean casserole, mystery stuffing and unyielding cranberry sauce to last a lifetime. Everybody says they want vegetables but nobody eats the vegetables. Just like those who order a salad with dressing on the side but eat all the french fries off your plate. Preferences vary. I know people who cook a turkey to the size of a Cornish game hen and still think it is not done.
But the ultimate in holiday sensitivities is family time. In the time of our forefathers Betsy married her cousin Bert and they lived on a farm with a tribe of relatives. For economic necessity everyone had to get along or the cow died. Now, you can avoid each other all year long even if you live in the same house (that’s why they have email) except for the holidays. Everyone in the family hates who you date, hates who you marry, hates what you do for a living and especially hates the holidays. Still we wouldn’t miss it for the world. But this year skip the cheap wine that has been stored under the unused bread maker for two years and sip a little Republic tequila instead.
Happy holidays fans of the Republic.
